Une forêt sacrée est une portion de terre préservée, généralement interdite d’accès au grand public, où se pratiquent des rituels liés aux traditions ancestrales et religieuses des communautés locales. Dans les chefferies traditionnelles de l’Ouest Cameroun, les forêts sacrées constituent un patrimoine naturel et culturel inestimable. Ces espaces boisés, souvent enclavés au cœur des villages, sont bien plus que des sanctuaires de biodiversité: ce sont des lieux sacrés dédiés à la préservation des croyances ancestrales, abritant des esprits, des totems, et des autels, ainsi que de précieuses plantes de la pharmacopée traditionnelle.
Au sein des chefferies, leur utilité dépasse largement la simple conservation écologique. Elles sont aussi le garant de la stabilité sociale et culturelle. Lors des moments de crise, les chefs traditionnels s’y retirent pour consulter les esprits ou chercher des solutions aux problèmes communautaires.
Ces lieux sont empreints de mysticisme. Ils sont perçus comme des portails entre le monde des vivants et celui des esprits. Les habitants y vouent un respect absolu, de crainte d’attirer la colère des ancêtres. Ainsi, couper un arbre ou chasser dans ces forêts sans autorisation peut être considéré comme une offense grave, pouvant entraîner des sanctions spirituelles ou sociales. Ce caractère sacré leur a permis de résister, à travers les siècles, à la déforestation et à la pression humaine.
À travers La Fondation FIDEPE, il est essentiel de réhabiliter et de protéger ces forêts, afin de préserver non seulement la richesse écologique, mais aussi le tissu spirituel et culturel des chefferies camerounaises.

A sacred forest is a protected area, generally off-limits to the general public, where rituals related to the local communities’ ancestral and religious traditions are performed. In the traditional chiefdoms of the West Region of Cameroon, sacred forests are an invaluable natural and cultural heritage. These wooded areas, often enclosed in the heart of villages, are much more than sanctuaries of biodiversity: they are sacred places dedicated to the preservation of ancestral beliefs, housing spirits, totems and altars, as well as precious plants used in traditional pharmacopoeia.
Within the chiefdoms, their usefulness goes far beyond simple ecological conservation. They are also the guarantors of social and cultural stability. In times of crisis, traditional rulers go there to consult the spirits or seek solutions to community problems.
These places are full of mysticism. They are seen as gateways between this world and that of the spirits. Inhabitants are absolutely devoting respect to them, for fear of attracting the wrath of the ancestors. As a result, cutting down a tree or hunting in these forests without permission can be considered a serious offence, which can result in spiritual or social sanctions. This sacred nature has enabled these sacred forests to resist deforestation and human pressure over the centuries.
Through the FIDEPE Foundation, it is essential to restore and protect these forests, in order to safeguard not only their ecological wealth, but also the spiritual and cultural heritage of Cameroon’s chiefdoms.
